Guide

Planning a New Zealand road trip? Don’t miss any of these epic spots on our South Island itinerary!

There is one toilet available at the parking lot and another one at the ‘false summit’. However, the one on the trail isn’t always kept up or very clean.

How long does it take to hike Roys Peak?

The time it takes to hike Roys Peak depends on a number of factors. The main determining factor when it comes to time would be your own fitness level. Mainly, how often are you hiking up a mountain with elevation gain? Generally the hike will take around 5-7 hours roundtrip.

Just before the end of the trail you’ll arrive at a spot known as the ‘false summit’, which is where a lot of people will end the hike and take in the incredible views. If you want to continue on, the true summit will be about another 30-45 minute climb up. However, the views from the ‘false summit’ are the ones you’ve probably seen all over the internet.

The trail itself isn’t technical or all that exciting. It’s a well-worn path, with many switchbacks and can seem endless, especially under the hot sun.

The good news?

The views are absolutely worth it, and once you reach the top, you *might* forget all about your burning legs. Take it slow, bring plenty of water, sunscreen and start early to beat the heat! We started the hike around 10am and we wish we had started earlier.

If early mornings aren’t your thing, late afternoon is another great option for softer lighting and fewer crowds. If you’re not super flexible with your timing, you can also do it in the middle of the day like we did. However, be prepared for some seriously sunny conditions. Bring a hat and sunscreen as the trail doesn’t offer any shade.

keep in mind

Part of the trail crosses through private property. Therefore, avoid hiking Roys Peak from October 1 to November 10, as the entire track is closed for lambing season when the lambs are born.

As for the best season, summer (December-February) offers warm temps and clear skies, but it’s also the busiest time. Autumn (March-May) brings mild weather and golden landscapes, making it one of the best seasons to go. Winter (June-August) can be icy at the top, but you might have some snow-capped mountain views.
