The trail is technically rated easy to moderate, however it’s perfect for beginners. There are only a few uneven sections, stairs, and minor drop-offs along the way. Overall, the path is easy to navigate and is well marked.
The Canyon Overlook trail starts with a brief set of stone steps and continues along a rocky path carved into the sandstone walls. There are sections with drop-offs, but many of them are protected by railings. The path isn’t dangerous but, as always, watch your step as you hike.

Along the way, you’ll pass under massive arches, cross a small wooden bridge, and walk beside towering sandstone cliffs.
The Canyon Overlook trail is family friendly and easy to hike with kids. We saw lots of families of varying ages along the trail. You’ll want to make sure your kids are kept away from the sections where the drop-offs are not protected by railings.
Do you need a permit to hike the Canyon Overlook Trail?
No permits are required to hike the Canyon Overlook Trail. However, you will need to pay the Zion National Park entrance fee of $35 USD. You can also purchase an annual Zion National Park pass for $70 if you plan to go more than once. We do recommend purchasing the America the Beautiful pass for $80 annually if you want to explore other National Parks as well.

How long does it take to hike the trail round-trip?
Due to the short distance of the actual trail, most people complete it in 30 to 60 minutes. If you’re planning to go for sunrise or sunset I’d allow more time at the top to enjoy the views!
Are dogs allowed on the Canyon Overlook Trail?
No. Dogs are not allowed on this trail or most trails in Zion National Park. They are allowed on leash on the Pa’rus Trail.
When is the best time to hike the Canyon Overlook trail?
The trail is open year-round, weather permitting. However, it can be slippery and dangerous during snow, ice, or heavy rain. Therefore it is best to proceed with caution if you choose to hike in inclement weather.

Early morning or later in the afternoon are best for fewer crowds and better lighting for photos. From our experience, midday tends to be the most crowded and makes it harder to find parking. Another added benefit to hiking in the morning or late afternoon is to avoid the midday sun. The Canyon Overlook trail is partially shaded, but a good portion is exposed. Make sure to bring enough water and sun protection.
Are there restrooms or facilities at the trailhead?
There are no restrooms at the trailhead. The nearest bathrooms are located at the Zion Visitor Center or the Canyon Junction area before the tunnel. If you stop at the Zion Visitor Center be sure to refill your reusable water bottle as well!

Good to Know
From March through late November, most of Zion Canyon is accessible only by using the park’s free shuttle system, which runs frequently between the Visitor Center and trailheads along the scenic drive. During this time, private vehicles are not allowed in Zion Canyon unless you’re staying at the lodge. However, you do not need the shuttle to access the Canyon Overlook Trail, as it’s located on the east side of the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel, outside the shuttle-only zone. This makes it one of the few easily accessible hikes year-round by private car
Can you see the Zion Canyon from the overlook?
Yes, this is the number one reason for completing this hike! The overlook provides a stunning panoramic view of the lower Zion Canyon, including the Pine Creek Canyon, switchbacks, and towering sandstone cliffs.
