Gaining popularity, Indoor & Outdoor food markets seem to be popping up in locations over the world and we are big fans! We’ve been to quite a few during our travels, including Gothenburgs The Market Hall (Saluhallen) and Rotterdams Markthal. However, there are two markets that particularly stand out.
Foodhallen in Amsterdam
We discovered Foodhallen on one of our past visits to Amsterdam and have tantalized our tastebuds multiple times since.
Easily accessable in Amsterdam’s Oud-West neighborhood, Foodhallen is a hip indoor food and drink market that is very popular with the locals.
The market hall is filled with around 20 high-end food stalls ranging from Vietnamese spring rolls to the famous Dutch fallen balls, from gourmet hamburgers to vegan sushi rolls and everything in between.
Even better, there are multiple bars including the very popular Gin & Tonic Bar where unique cocktails are served in fish-bowl style glasses. Foodhallen is the perfect place to unwind after a full day of exploring Amsterdam’s trendy and history-rich city.
Address: Bellamyplein 51, 1053, Amsterdam
Foodhallen is open daily from 11:00am to 11:30 pm Sunday through Thursday. Friday and Saturday the doors are open until 1:00am.
Borough Market in London
If you’re in London sight seeing, it can be difficult to squeeze all the many things the large city has to offer into a single trip.
But if you enjoy eating and consider it an essential part of experiencing the destination you likely paid a great deal to visit, you must make time for Borough Market.
Borough Market is a foodie’s delight. You can find something for everyone among the many venders’ eateries.
From gluten-free Carrot cake to Indian food, Burough Market will satisfy all tastes due to the amount of variety available.
Including traditional meat pies, vegetarian cuisine, alongside vegan and cheese venders and sellers of various cured meats, Burough Market will make a great stop for lunch or early dinner.
Located next to the Southwark Cathedral and London Bridge, Borough Market is a short walk from the London Bridge tube station and just down the river from Tower Bridge. It is open from six days a week, Monday through Saturday. It can be busy during summer months and on Saturday so prepare for a crowd, but it’s worth the visit.
Located adjacent to to Borough Market is a great pub called Southwark Tavern on the corner of Southwark Street and Stoney Street. Have a beer downstairs in one of their old prison styled rooms complete with iron bars.
