It’s not as often I head out for sunrise shoots these days but when I do I always feel rejuvenated and more connected to nature. So here’s to spending more mornings watching the sun come up in 2022.

When was the last time you watched the sunrise?

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS: MASTERING MANUAL SETTINGS The PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS: MASTERING MANUAL SETTINGS

The second part of learning manual camera settings is aperture or f-stop. Head back to the last post to learn about shutter speed!

📷 Aperture

Aperture (f-stop) is basically the opening in a lens which allows light to enter the camera.

Aperture controls the depth of field meaning that if you have a low aperture (wider opening) you’ll have more bokeh (a blurred background). A low aperture will also result in a brighter image since you are allowing more light to enter the camera.

A low aperture is good for photos with a shallow depth of field, night photography and if you want to allow more light in.

A high aperture (smaller opening) is perfect for landscape & architecture photography, action shots and for brighter days. This will allow both the foreground and background to be sharp and in focus.

Remember This: Aperture is referred to as f-stop which will look something like this f/1.4, f/2.8, f/4, f/11 and so on. The thing to remember is that the smaller the number the larger the opening. Therefore f/2.8 is larger than f/4 or f/11.

One of the most important ways that you can improve your photography skills is by using manual settings. While it may be daunting (and slightly confusing) at first learning manual settings will only get easier with practice!

Over the next few posts I’ll share some easy to remember manual photography tips so that you can practice & get comfortable with it!

📷 Shutter Speed

Shutter speed is the length of time that the camera’s shutter is open exposing it to light. This setting tells your camera how long it needs to stay open to take a photo.

Shutter speed is measured in either seconds or fractions of a second and looks something like this 1/250 s, 1/500 s. Shutter speed plays an important role in photography because it does two main things: adjusts the brightness of your photo and creates effects like freeze motion and blur.

Use a low or slow shutter speed to capture things like flowing water or the northern lights. But just remember that you’ll want to use a tripod to prevent a blurry picture when shooting with a low shutter speed.

Use a fast or high shutter speed to freeze motion and easily capture things that are moving.

Chasing lighthouses in Maine! Driving the coast o Chasing lighthouses in Maine!

Driving the coast of Maine led me to many beautiful lighthouses including this one in Bristol! The Pemaquid Point Lighthouse was built in 1827 and visitors can explore inside the lighthouse and the museum.

There is a $3 fee per person to enter and parking directly out front. It’s pretty windy right by the coast so be sure to bring an extra layer if you are visiting in the fall or winter!
